Racial attacks, murders, deaths of children, closed universities, doctors on strike, terrorist attacks, unethical employers, trials and harsh sentences, is an image of Greece during 2013 that most people will unfortunately have.
The following are the most important events that have left their mark on 2013:
The murder of Pavlos Fyssas and attack on Golden Dawn offices in Neo Iraklio
On September 17, 34-year-old musician Pavlos Fyssas was attacked by 45-year-old Golden Dawn supporter Giorgos Roupakias. His murder sparked a spate of revelations about Golden Dawn, which has now been characterized as a criminal organization by the Greek Supreme Court. It is the first time in modern Greek history that the leader and prominent members of a political party have been sent to prison. A few months later on November 1, two members of Golden Dawn were shot dead outside of their offices in Neo Iraklio, while a third was seriously injured.
The tragic death of a child and two students caused by a brazier
The increased price of heating oil is another significant problem for Greeks. Tragically, three children lost their lives through the use of improvised heaters. Nikos Papahronis, Savvas Papadopoulos and 13-year-old Sara died in 2013 due to the cold.
“Strawberries and  blood” in Manolada
The news from the strawberries of Manolada went around the world. Two hundred immigrants from Bangladesh were the victims of their employer Niko Vagelato. When they asked for their salaries, he attacked them, sending thirty to hospital.
The little Maria- The blond angel
The little Maria, the blond angel with blue eyes was found by Police in a Roma camp in Farsala, Central Greece. Her case revealed a circle of fraudulent birth registrations. Maria’s biological mother was found in Bulgaria.
Akis Tsochatzopoulos in prison for bribery
It was the most important trial for 2013 in Greece. Akis Tsochatzopoulos, the former PASOK minister was found guilty of money laundering and taking kickbacks from arms procurement programmes while in office. He has been sentenced to 20 years by an Athens court, the maximum allowed for the crime.
The Lagarde list and the former minister Papakonstantinou
The former Minister of Finance, George Papakonstantinou, is accused of deleting names of his relatives from the well-known Lagarde list.
The closure of ERT, the DT and NERIT
On June 11, government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou announced the immediate closure of the state broadcaster, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT). What happened next was dramatic. Employees of ERT occupied the Radiomegaro in Agia Paraskeui in an attempt to keep broadcasting. One month later, Public Television (DT) was on air and recruited 800 people.
