Emergency Measures for Smog Being Made in Greece

Athens SmogThe Greek government is attempting to reduce smog by promoting a number of measures including restrictions on the movement of vehicles, closing of schools and central heating and reduction of industrial activity, during the days when air pollution is at its highest due to the use of fireplaces and stoves.
As reported, the measures will be enforced according to the level of air pollution and will be activated by the Environment Ministry in Athens and regional councils in the rest of the country, as follows:

  • Recommendations to vulnerable groups to avoid remaining outdoors, particularly in areas with increased traffic
  • Closing of nurseries and schools
  • Recommendations for decreasing the use of fireplaces
  • Setting of thermostats at 18 degrees for central heating and shutting down heating in public buildings (except for hospitals and other similar facilities)
  • Reduction of industrial production by 30%
  • Restrictions on the movement of trucks, school buses and cars in specific areas that will be defined on a case by case basis
  • Free electricity to the beneficiaries of the Social Residential Tariff in order to encourage the use of air conditioning and other forms of electric heating instead of stoves and fireplaces.

Meanwhile, the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung published an article on the economic crisis and the affect it is having on the environment in Greece. As reported, “air quality has dramatically deteriorated over the last few years, at least in Greek cities.”
