Cheaper Christmas Dinners for 2013

A survey conducted by the Commerce and Services Institute of the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (ESEE) has suggested that Greeks will spend on average, 2.51% less this year on the Christmas dinner.
The survey was carried out between December 13 and 18 and found that the Christmas dinner in Greece will cost on average 147.75 euros, compared to 151.56 euros in 2012 and 158.93 euros in 2011.
The 3.81 euro reduction since 2012 is quite small and reflects the fact that meat prices have not dropped in the last year. Specifically, lamb has remained at 7 euros per kilogram, while pork prices have risen by 5.41% and turkey by 11.11%. Holiday sweets, melomakarona or kourampiedes, have dropped significantly in price by around 11% since December 2012.
The prices of potatoes, tomatoes and cabbage have dropped by 6%, 3% and 29% respectively, while apples and lettuce have increase by 24.55% and 15.8% respectively. Feta cheese has dropped by 13.93%.
ESEE believes that since the beginning of the Greek economic crisis, turnover during the Christmas holidays has reduced by around 70%. ESEE officials stated that, “The expected reduction in consumer spending once again reflects the long-term decline in Christmas turnover, with a contraction of around 10.5% compared to the same period last year. In absolute figures, retail turnover this December is expected to be 6.8 billion euros, down 0.8 billion on 2012.”
Turnover during the Christmas and New Year holidays is an important part of annual retail sales and for some companies the last chance to make any money. If sales dip as expected, then many stores will probably have to close after the holiday season.
