Health Ministry Accepts Resignation of OKANA Chief

okanaGreek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has accepted the resignation of the head of Organization Against Drugs (OKANA), which runs the country’s biggest rehabilitation program for drug users.
Meni Malliori’s resignation came after accusations by the Deputy Minister of Health, Zeta Makri, who claimed that an investigation into OKANA revealed an 8.4-million-euro deficit.
The Deputy Health Minister also accused the OKANA Chief of violating safety procedures in administering substitute drugs to addicts. She reported that, “While the substitute should be taken sublingually, OKANA doctors were advising the  drug addicts to chew it in order to have a faster effect,” explaining that the doctors were following this tactic to limit long waits in OKANA centers.
Malliori has denied the allegations, claiming that there isn’t a deficit in the organization’s finances. As to the substitute drug, she stated that according to the recommendations of the production company of the substitute drug, “it dissolves faster in the mouth.”
It is not yet known who will replace Malliori in the leadership of OKANA.
