Rhodes: Disabled Dancer Mesmerizes Audience

disability_There is a standard stereotype which connects the ability to dance with the perfect human body. George Christakis’ aim is to crush this stereotype. He is the initiator and founder of dance theater DAGIPOLI, whose goal is to show that even someone with physical disabilities can put on a great dance show.
Christakis, a person with disability, gave a speech at the conference “dance and disability.” He attended with his dance teacher Eirini Spyrou with whom he gave a fantastic performance. The show was a wonderful example of magical coexistence of two human bodies dancing, overcoming the barrier of physical disability. They proved that dancing is a vehicle to represent equality for all people.
Moreover, Christakis stressed that Greece’s educational system is the main reason why many people with disabilities are in social exclusion. He stressed that Greek families who have a disabled family member, hide the disability, thus protecting their image from being “different.”
He added “the Greek state has no structure and you cannot expect everything from everyone all the time.” Christakis emphasized that disabled people in Greece do not leave their homes often, nor do they attend events. Generally, they are socially excluded.
