Evidence found on the computers of jailed Golden Dawn party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and party spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris, who are among those facing charges of operating a criminal gang, show them denouncing democracy and being involved in paramilitary training that could be enough to bring charges of treason against them, it was reported.
It was discovered by technicians from deleted files and the newspaper Kathimerini, citing sources it didn’t identify, said officials believe the evidence is strong enough to bring additional charges against the party leaders and members. Michaloliakos and two other of his 18 Members of Parliament, are in detention while three others have also been charged among more than two dozen party zealots arrested.
It was said that the material includes speeches given by Michaloliakos and Kasidiaris exhorting the overthrow of the government of the New Democracy Conservatives of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his partner, PASOK Socialist chief Evangelos Venizelos, who is Deputy Premier/Foreign Minister.
Coupled with the evidence suggesting party supporters trained like members of a paramilitary organization and supported Nazi principles, the evidence could be enough for magistrates to bring charges under Article 135 of the penal code, which deals with cases of treason.
Much of the digital evidence gathered from the homes of Michaloliakos and contained dozens of videos and photos that could prove incriminating for the party, which denies being sympathetic to Nazi ideology and using violence.
Images leaked to the media show Kasidiaris brandishing a number of firearms in photographs, including an AK-47 which is unlawful in Greece, and leading paramilitary-style training of Golden Dawn members. There are also pictures of Golden Dawn members performing Nazi salutes and one wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit.
Kasidiaris said the photos showed him “exercising” and questioned whether there were any objections to him training so that he does not end up “obese like Venizelos,” a reference to the heavyset Venizelos.
As for the KKK-style hoods, Ilias Panayiotaros, who faces trial on criminal charges along with Kasidiaris and several other neo-fascist deputies, attributed them to a “Carnival” party.
Material gathered from the homes of lawmakers Nikos Michos and Yiannis Lagos has not provided magistrates Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou with any new information but they are yet to review evidence recovered from the properties of five other Golden Dawn deputies, including Panayiotaros, being investigated.
The alleged evidence was discovered after technicians were able to recover it from computers although the material had been deleted.
One shows Michaloliakos and another MP who had been arrested, Georgios Germenis, giving Heil Hitler-style Nazi salutes during the initiation of new members taking vows of loyalty to the party.
