Athens University Senate Appeals to Reopen on Monday

nomikiThe Senate of Athens University demands that courses begin on December 16, while at the same time aims to overpass all the technical difficulties so that administrative staff will resume working. UoA Rector Theodossis Pelegrinis requested a senate meeting which took place earlier in the day. The senate appealed to all parties in order to resume courses on December 16.
“We ask all the university departments as well as the Ministry of Education, to help classes resume on December 16. It seems like the only realistic solution in order to break the deadlock,” declared Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Political Science, Michalis Tsinisizelis, after the meeting.
He added “The major purpose is to not lose the academic semester,” noting that serious problems have been caused due to administrative staff mobility. According to Tsinisizelis, the decision of reopening the university also requires a fundamental and calm discussion. He expressed his belief that the semester should be saved, without affecting the quality of the educational process.
On top of that, the chairmen and deputy chairmen of the university boards signed a common statement, expressing their disappointment about the unacceptable attacks launched against the institution of educational councils; elected by the vote of a large majority of Greek University teachers, composed of internationally distinguished academics with integrity and democratic ethos.
They believe that closed Universities inhibit any attempts of modernization and undermine public education, in contrast with the open universities which are serving the interest of the students and generally Greek society, which should be fully respected.
Meanwhile, the General Students’ Assembly supported the DAP proposal to open the Athens Law School and start courses as soon as possible. However, the University is still closed and occupied by a minority group.
