Community Unites After Fire Destroys Home in Crete

home-Unemployed citizens and students of the Second Chance School of Chania showed a strong sense of community, in an effort to rebuild the house of a classmate who became homeless after a devastating fire hit Vamvakopoulo, Chania, last May. The unified group is in need of assistance — financial, helping hands and materials — in order to continue their effort.
The devastating fire that took place May 28, burned the residence of a family among other things. According to FlashNews, the first days after the disaster, the Social Service of Chania assisted the family covering all their basic needs, while teams of technical services helped in cleaning the interiors reconstructing the floor.
The unemployed daughter of the family was accommodated in the Chania Municipal Nursing Home, while individuals from Athens, offered many things to replace household goods that were destroyed.
Meanwhile, the Municipality of Chania established a committee of damage assessment. The Mayor Mrs Chrysoula Hadjidakis, stated that Ministry of Public Order & Citizen Protection approved the grant of 3,000 euros which will be released in a few days, to help the family.
The entire family lives in one room — the only one in tact after the fire. Under the present conditions, the winter becomes even more difficult for the family; this was a huge motivating factor for the unemployed group of citizens and students of the Second Chance School of Chania  who showed their selfless and genuine solidarity with the reconstruction of the family residence.
