Did Greek Hotel Use Crisis for Free Maid?

Maid in AeginaA man on the island of Aegina, Greece posted an ad in the newspaper asking for a maid but saying that she wouldn’t be paid! The GSEE local community reacted negatively to this.
Instead of a salary the owner offered the maid accommodation and food. The ad read: “Looking for a maid for voluntary work at a hotel in Aegina, accommodation and food are provided,” reflecting the tragic situation that Greece is in, due to the economic crisis.
As the spokesman for GSEE, Dimitris Karageorgopoulos stated: “A hotel in Aegina was asking for a maid in the newspaper and instead of a salary, offers food and accommodation. It is not the first time an incident like this one has been reported to the GSEE. In the past there was a report for a gas station in Patras, which instead of an Easter bonus offered to pay employees in gasoline.
Another car dealership that owed several months worth of salary to its employees, offered them some of unsold cars instead. Furthermore many companies make offers to their employees to offset the debts, either with food or items sold by each company.
Karageorgopoulos also said, “This is an illegal act. No employee shall accept such proposals. It is clear that the employee should be paid for the job he or she offers. We have already reported the hotel owner from Aegina to the Ministry of Labour Inspectorate.”
