8 Arrests Per Day for Debts to the Public Sector

arrests-debtsFrom the beginning of the year until September 30, 2013, the Greek police have proceeded with 2,267 arrests for debts owed to the public sector and other tax offenses. According to the statistics held by the relevant department of Greek Police Headquarters (Directorate of Public Security) the debts reach the amount of 9,226,76,.454,33 euros.
This means that practically every day, the police are arresting 8  people who owe the State. As reported by the Minister of Public Order, police authorities  have dealt with 365 cases of debtors, but they didn’t proceed with arrests, as ordered by law, due to a past settlement of the debts.
The Minister of Justice, Charalambos Athanasiou, responding to a question of the MP Nikos Nikolopoulos, sent a document to the Greek parliament which notifies that the appropriate ministries evaluate the framework that regulates the administrative and criminal sanctions. It is reported that  all necessary improvements will occur.
