Melbourne: Monument Dedicated to Greek Immigrants Unveiled

monument for the Greek immigrantA monument dedicated to Greek immigrants was erected in the monastery of Panagia Kamariani. The monastery is at the top of the Red Hill which overlooks the Port Phillip bay; the port where ships entered carrying thousands of immigrants  to Melbourne.

The unveiling of the monument took place on November 10, in the presence of many Greeks and officials. The Australian Prime Minister was represented by the Minister of Environment, Greg Hunt, who talked about priest Eleftherios who took the initiative in the construction of the monument. He talked about the “passionate priest” and his incredible energy and impressive work in the monastery.

The State Education Minister used flattering words when he spoke about Greek immigrants and their contribution to the development of Australia.

The Federal Labor party was represented by the MP Maria Vamvakinou, and the state Labor party was represented by the Minister Jenny Mikakou. In their speeches, both women expressed emotion and joy about the existence of the monument symbolizing the daily toil, the struggle for survival, and the recognition and achievements of Greek immigrants.
