Bike Sharing in Athens

bike sharingThe countdown for the operation of a bike sharing  system in Athens has begun. Similar systems are successfully being operated in Paris, London, Berlin and other European cities. As announced by the Municipality of Athens on December 4, the operating company for the installation, operation, maintenance and exploitation of the system will be chosen after public tender.
According to the plan of Athens municipality, the placement of the stations was approved last July, by the city council of Athens. The bike sharing system will provide 1,000 bikes at 70 spots. The stations will be placed in attractive and lively spots, in squares next to metro stations, and near archaeological sites and public services.
However, there are concerns about the proper operation of the system, since all cities abroad have an extensive network of bicycle paths with very good infrastructure, with proper storage of bicycles, and of course with the necessary respect towards cyclists.
Athens municipality will have to deal with important problems like the bad driving behavior of citizens, the protection of bikes from stealing and the proper functioning of the existing bicycle paths.
