Sydney Morning Herald Writes about Parthenon Marbles

Parthenon MarblesThe President of the International Organization for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles –David Hill- spoke of the UK’s implacability on the matter of the Parthenon Sculptures’ return to Greece, in his article for the Australian newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald.

The article makes a historical reference to the story of the “transfer of the Marbles from the Parthenon to the UK by Lord Elgin and their subsequent sale to the British Museum.”

According to AMNA the author said that “Changes are going to happen, especially now, with the new UNESCO regulations concerning cultural property theft.” He then explained that Greece has already appealed to UNESCO requesting mediation in order to resolve the matter and is currently waiting for the UK’s response.

As a member of UNESCO the UK has already signed the contract in question, therefore, they would  in a difficult position if Greece’s appeal is denied.

In any case, Mr. Hill stated that “in any mediation process, Britain does not have any support from the other UNESCO members or by the international community including Australia.”
