Dendias: Immigration Policy During EU Presidency

The Greek Minister of Public Order–Nikos Dendias–said that the Greek government will put under discussion, the issues of immigration that promote a common European future and coincide with Greek interests and positions, during the Greek presidency of the EU.
In this context, he explained that it was essential to underline and clarify the violation of passing the European borders without travel documents or permission. As the minister said, we very often use the phrase “irregular immigrants” instead of “illegal immigrants” and then added that “it is extremely important to clarify that entering Europe without documents of permission is still an illegal act.”
Mr. Dendias mentioned that the second issue to which the government has a clear position on, is Europe and the European State’s right to restrict any person that illegally enters its borders. “This right is the key to any understanding of national sovereignty. I say this because there are people within the country who may still believe otherwise.”
In reference to the results of the immigration policy, the Minister pointed out that there has been tremendous progress, despite the major problems that exist. Mr. Dendias underlined the fact that efforts have been made to return illegal immigrants to their countries of origin. Greece is currently first in this field. The Minister added that from September 2012 to September 2013–27,382 illegal immigrants were returned to their countries of origin; while during the same period, it was estimated that approximately 12,000 immigrants passed our borders.
