The investigation into the killing of two Golden Dawn members outside a party office has led authorities to think that a terrorist offshoot group may be behind the murders, which have also been seen as revenge for the stabbing death of an anti-fascist hip-hop artist in September for which a party member was arrested.
Counter-terrorism officers are looking at a small group of suspects linked to attacks that have been claimed by the Sect of Revolutionaries, a terrorist group believed to have been inactive since the murder of the journalist Sokratis Giolias in July 2010, it was reported.
The newspaper Kathimerini said it was told by sources that the suspects under investigation either avoided a police crackdown on domestic terrorism in 2009 and 2010 or were among those released after completing the maximum of 18 months in pre-trial custody.
Greek Police reportedly now believe the Nov. 1 murders were carried out by a new organization comprising members of the revolutionaries and other related groups such as Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire.
A proclamation signed by imprisoned members of the latter group last month called for the formation of a “united front” with other terrorist organizations, including the Sect of Revolutionaries and attacks on journalists, judges, politicians and authority figures. Some police sources also said there could be the emergence of a “second-generation Sect of Revolutionaries.”
Police are also investigating the possible involvement of Nikos Maziotis, a member of another group, Revolutionary Struggle, who is a fugitive. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks which CCTV footage shows was carried out by a gunman who got off a motorcycle and shot dead two Golden Dawn guards, Manolis Kapelonis, 22, and Giorgos Fountoulis, 27, who froze during the assault. A third man was seriously wounded.
The victims were buried on Nov. 4. Politicians and journalists were banned from the ceremonies.
