$40,000 Raised for Lemnos Memorial Statue

Port PhillipThe event which took place at the Parliament House of Victoria aiming to raise money in order to establish a monument that will honor the contribution of Lemnos at the battle of Gallipoli, raised an amount of $40,000.

“My grandfather served in Gallipoli and he was hosted in the island of Lemnos. He was one of the soldiers who found settlement in Greek hospitality,” said Ted Baillieu, the former Premier of Victoria and Chair of the Victorian Anzac Centenary Committee.

The Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial Statue will be placed at the park of the city Port Phillip. Peter Colrett will design the statue which is inspired from Classical Greek sculptures.

Almost 60,000 soldiers of ANZAC passed from the island of Lemnos. Some of them camped there in order to land in Gallipoli. Some rest in peace on the friendly island, while the sick and injured soldiers recovered there with residents of the Greek island by their side as well as the 130 Australian nurses. Citizens helped nurses care for injured soldiers and gave assistance to Australian and New Zealander soldiers who were exhausted from battle.
