Trial Postponed for the Former Mayor of Thessaloniki

georgThe court of appeal in Thessaloniki, postponed the trial of the former mayor of Thessaloniki, Vasilis Papageorgopoulos until January 16. Mr. Papageorgopoulos was sentenced to life imprisonment for the embezzlement of approximately 18 million Euros from municipal funds.
The hearing was postponed after the court convened on several occasions this week, due to the backlog of other hearings and legal obstacles that prevented it from progressing.
Michalis Lemoussias, his former general secretary, and Panagiotis Saxonis, the former mayor’s right-hand were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Papageorgopoulos was the mayor of Thessaloniki for two consecutive stints. He asked the judges to examine his case as soon as possible. He also claimed that he is innocent, and that the embezzlement of municipal funds happened before his first term.
