The Exhibition “Greek Architects of Istanbul” in Chicago

Greek Architects of IstanbulThe exhibition “Greek Architects of Istanbul in the era of Westernization” travels for a new tour in the U.S.A, starting from Chicago and specifically from Damen Student Center at Loyola University, where it will be hosted from the 27th of October, until the 10th of November.

The exhibition was organized in the framework of the European Capital of Culture “Istanbul 2010” and it was inaugurated on November 2010, were it was premiered at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University of Istanbul. The program was inspired and realized by the Zographion Lyceum Alumni Association and funded by the Organization European Capital of Culture “Istanbul 2010” and the John. S. Latsis public Benefit Foundation.

The exhibition showcases the imprint of the Greek architects in Istanbul’s built environment, presenting to the wide audience, 104 different buildings of 57 architects, who were active from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, through photographs and archive material.

In January 2014, the exhibition will be presented in Iowa, hosted by the parish of St. Elias. In 2014, the exhibition is expected to tour in other states of America, attracting the largest audience possible, in order to introduce the decisive contribution of Greek architects to the Europeanization of the building activity in Istanbul.

The Greek architects, introduced new architectural building types and morphological patterns in their works, which are ranging from shopping centers to apartment buildings, from religious temples to community buildings, and even funerary monuments of incomparable artistic value, thus creating the face of the city today.
