A Free Coffee for Thessaloniki’s Less Fortunate

kafeneio1Every day begins with a cup of coffee……at least for most of us, but what happens with the refugees and the homeless? Now, shop owners of Greece took the initiative to create the program “A cup of coffee is waiting for you,” so that people less fortunate can enjoy a coffee as a treat.
In Toumba Thessaloniki, there is the traditional coffee shop called “Chainis”, which is the first that takes part on this initiative. There, you can prepay for a coffee or for a sweet for someone else who is in need.
“The initiative in our shop was better than the expected. In the first days we customers contributed to treating about 37 coffees, a really important number because our seats are almost 40. Our customers leave us change, or prepay for a coffee,” said Christos Sakellaris the owner of the coffee shop.
Every shop which taking part in this initiative has the sticker “A coffee is waiting for you” and the logo of the Greek magazine “Shedia”. You can also see the number of treated coffees.
“The first day a gentleman holding a paper with our address on it came to us. He asked if there is a treated coffee for him- he had been informed by the church. At first, he seemed hesitant but then he enjoyed his coffee and talked with the other customers,” added Mr. Sakellaris Christos.
This is the only coffee shop which takes part in Thessaloniki. The initiative “A coffee is waiting for you” is developing all over Greece, from Crete to Grevena and from Orestiada to Ioannina. Now, Cyprus is also adopting the positive gesture.
