Turkey Lifts Ban On Islamic Head Scarf

ban abolitionTurkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan abolished the compulsory Islamic head scarf for women in state institutions. The ban has kept many women from joining the public workforce and a decades-old restriction has been finally ended.

The lifting of the ban is connected to a cabinet decree from 1925 when Ataturk introduced a series of clothing reforms meant to eliminate symbols of religious affiliation for civil servants. This regulation consist a part of a “democratization package” unveiled by Erdogan last week.

The new regulation, which will not apply to the judiciary or the military, was published in the Official Gazette and take immediate effect. In addition, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag wrote on his Twitter account that a regulation that formally was intervened in freedom of clothing and lifestyle – a source of inequality, discrimination and injustice among our people – has become history.

These democratic reforms are including also changes to the electoral system, the broadening of language rights and permission for villages to use their original Kurdish names.
