IKA Employee Jailed For 1M Euro Fraud

111221185645515An employee of IKA , Greece’s health care system, who worked in Makrakomi, Western Macedonia has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for defrauding the state of one million euros ($1.35 million.)
The IKA employee had won one billion drachmas in lottery, which he lost in the stock market. From 2000 to 2005, prosecutors said he began to defraud the IKA fund but he was finally “trapped” by loan sharks, found out, and arrested.
The story was revealed when the inspectors from the head of the IKA arrived in Makrakomi to do an audit and found the sum missing.
After this incident, the employee went to Cyprus to avoid his arrest and the usurers but was finally arrested in Koroni Messinia, four years later.
His original sentence was for three life sentences but the court accepted extenuating circumstance of sincere repentance and the time in jail was reduced to the 20-year term.
