Anastasiades Determined to Solve Cypriot Issue

In his speech at the General Assembly of the United Nations, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, repeated that he is determined to solve the Cypriot issue.

“Despite the current financial difficulties that we are facing, I am determined to work tirelessly and with determination in order to achieve a sustainable and continuous arrangement, so that all communities of Cyprus will live and prosper in a modern European country, which will fully respect the principles and values of the United Nations and the European Union, will guarantee the fundamental freedoms and human rights of all of its citizens and will ensure the peaceful coexistence and the prosperous cooperation between them,” Anastasiades stated.

The Cypriot President stressed that he has already forwarded to the UN Secretary General his “strong belief” that the current status quo is unacceptable and its maintenance will have negative impact on Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, as he said, noting that, “An overall settlement is not just desired but must not delay further as well.”

President Anastasiades pointed out that, “The reference made by the friend President of the Republic of Turkey, Abdullah Gül,” as he reported, “in this exact room, concerning the proposition of 2004, which had not been accepted by the great majority of Greek-Cypriots, through genuine democratic processes, for a series of substantive reasons, does not exempt Turkey from its duties and responsibilities, as far as the efforts to find a fair solution are concerned, and does not truly reflect the realities on the ground, as they are confirmed by the relevant resolutions of the United Nations.”
