According to information released by the Minister of Labor, Social Security and Welfare in the Parliament, answering   PASOK MP Pyrros Dimas‘ question, expenditure on sickness benefits last year amounted to the same as in 2003.
Based on the same data, the reduction of public expenditure on health benefits for last year compared with 2009 reached 50% as a result of the financial austerity.
In fact, four years ago when the financial crisis began in Greece, the expenditure of the Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Welfare for sickness benefits amounted to 8,383,755,274 euros.
In 2012, this rate was reduced to 4,521,063,549 euros, reaching the health expenditures of 2003.
The document of the labor minister which was sent to parliament, outlined the decline in expenditure on sickness benefits from the dictatorship until today, in the most dramatic way.
