The Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sports, communicated to the Ministry of Administration Reform and e-Governance its plan to suspend no less than 1,655 administrative employees from universities around the country.
According to the list submitted to the Ministry of Administrative Reform, the Education Ministry has decided to suspend
600 from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens
438 from the National Technical University of Athens
240 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
153 from the University of Patra
96 from the University of Crete
53 from the University of Ioannina
40 from the University of Thessaly and
35 from the Athens University of Economics
However, the grim governmental plans were not left unanswered by the universities. Both the Technical University and the Senate of the University of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, proceeded to ceasing all of their operations on Sept. 19 and 20.
In addition, the union of administrative employees of the University of Athens responded that the function of the University will be impossible after the proposed staff cuts and warned of further strikes. With so many employees dismissed, the University of Athens will not be able to offer a wide range of research work included in international obligations.
The registration for new-coming students will also be unable due to the strikes, while graduation ceremonies have been postponed.
