Aids Infected Prostitutes in Athens

0a70c25ad446665b91d7c090a430cb82.w600.h340.z1As noted in a document signed by the Secretary General for Gender Equality, Zetta Makri, which was sent to the Hellenic Parliament after a question raised by New Democracy MP Fevronia Patrianakou, “…the deadly virus was introduced in Greece after 2010, probably from Asia, while the virus transmission mode among injecting users in the area of Athens has changed dramatically.”
The consequence of this tragic reality has been the sharp increase of the AIDS virus: the prevalence of the disease from 4.8 two years ago, today reaches 8.1%.
Alongside a rapid growth, a spread of hepatitis C has been noted among addicts.
”Especially in the area of Athens, suicidal behavior has increased along with injecting drug use, needle sharing, the use of different substances, the resort to new, cheap but highly dangerous substances, unprotected sex.”
Patrianakou, asked for a report from the International Committee of the UN, according to which in 2011 in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania a significant increase of HIV incidents was reported due to the high prevalence of the virus in injecting users. She also referred to the increasing use of cheap synthetic drugs.
Last year it was revealed that a number of prostitutes working in Greece were infected with the AIDS virus.
