TIF encircled by protestersPolice in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, are bracing for protests against austerity measures and the firing of public workers during the International Trade Fair from Sept. 6-7.
Authorities said they would deploy 3,500 police and re-arrange traffic patterns and that the country’s Police Chief would be in the city to oversee security.
On Sept. 6, representatives of the Hellenic Police, the Fire Brigade and Coast Guard will host a rally at the White Tower at 18:00. GSEE and ADEDY, the country’s largest trade unions, have organized their rally for 18:00 on Sept. 7, at the Venizelos statue. The Communist union PAME’s rally will take place at the nearby Aristotelous square.
Residents from Halkidiki protesting a planned gold mine will demonstrate and members from the Anarchist Movement of Thessaloniki are also expected to be on the streets.
A parliamentary delegation of the State Parliament of Victoria in Australia will also be at the event, known as TIF. Among the MPs are the President of the Legislative Council Bruce Atkinson, Parliament Speaker Ken Smith as well as Australian Members of the Parliament like Khalil Eideh, Damian Drum and Joe Helper.
The delegation was invited to Greece by the President of the Hellenic Parliament Evangelos Meimarakis and Greek Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Theodore Karaoglou. This year, with the initiative of the Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce (HACCI), Australian businesses are taking part in the TIF as well. Australian MPs are to also meet with Greek ministers and the Speaker of the House.
