The construction of the Thessaloniki Metro is going to start again, following an agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the Mayor of Thessaloniki. The agreement concerns the protection of the antiquities which were found during the excavations.
The challenging construction stopped when antiquities were found during excavation for the Venizelos station. The ancient objects found during the digging has obviously split the public opinion in the city.
Mayor Yannis Boutaris seems to be in favor of the preservation of the antiquities and has appealed for their protection to the Council of State.
The new construction schedule of Thessaloniki metro says that 80% of the path will be retained, while part of the station will be converted into an archeological site available to visitors. The new plan also requires all exhibits to be transferred elsewhere for a while until construction finishes, according to a study by the Technical Chamber and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
