Minister of Education and OLME Talks Break Down

4DBA3334259FBD5CE3AD39245D115244A normal opening of the new school year is at risk, after the fruitless meeting of the Minister of Education, Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos, with the board of the teachers’ union OLME, which was held on August 22 at the ministry, after the union’s request to discuss the controversial suspension scheme and other practical issues concerning the scheduling of the new school year.
Despite the Minister’s reassurance, educators insist on their positions and are planning to organize a series of strikes in the beginning of the school year. However, the government responded that schools will operate as normal.
Arvanitopoulos addressed the educational community saying that there will be no more suspensions of teachers and he highlighted the effort being made to absorb teachers related to health professions by bodies of the Ministry of Health, as well as for the rest suspended to be absorbed by other public organizations or services of the Ministry of Education  related to educational training.
Educators react to the reduction of almost 16,000 high school teachers through suspensions, transfers and retirement, while they are opposed to the changes put forward for the Lyceum.
OLME complains that the application deadline for the educators who will be transferred expires in two days and educators have not yet been given answers to some very critical  questions.
