D8161B35F9D4F392EB4CD1871AA9D6F6The well-known Greek singer Maria Farantouri will celebrate her fifty years of singing with a big concert at the Herod Atticus Theater on September 17.  Elli Paspala and Savvina Yannatou will appear with her on stage.
Maria Farantouri, born in Athens on 28 November 1947, was also a political and cultural activist. She has collaborated with prominent Greek composers such as Mikis Theodorakis, who wrote the score for Pablo Neruda’s Canto General, which Farantouri performed.
“I traveled with the wings of music, poetry and of the Greek language. An endless voyage. I grew up with my song, with it I became aware of the world, and I came to love people. I sang their struggle, their joy, their sorrow. With my art I fell in love with life, I believed in hope: and I am here, present. The girl from Nea Ionia with the dream, that goes on, because it was yesterday that I started singing,” Farantouri said.
Fifty years after, she sings songs from her vast repertoire containing works of great Greek composers, such as Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Chatzidakis, Dionisis Savvopoulos, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Manos Loizos, Lefteris Papadopoulos as well as the works of foreign composers, such as Zulfu Livaneli, Kurt Weill, Charles Lloyd, Lucio Dalla, with lyrics of the poets Constantine Cavafi, Odysseas Elytis, George Seferis, Giannis Ritsos, Aggelos Sikelianos, Nikos Gatsos, Federico Garcia Loca, Pablo Neruda, Bertolt Brecht as well as songs written by the lyricists Iakovos Kambanellis, Lefteris Papadopoulos and Kostas Kartelias
The orchestrations of the performance are signed by Takis Farazis.
