Greeks of Egypt Feel Safe

KAIRO40_533_355Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets on August 16  after police attacks against supporters of Egypt’s first freely elected president Mohamed Morsi, who was overthrown last month, left more than 620 people dead.

Greeks living in Egypt pray for peace in the country. Speaking to ANA-MPA, the president of the Greek Community in Cairo, Christos Kavalis noted that, “What the international media broadcast is unfortunately far from reality.”

Kavalis asserted that, “As Greeks living in Egypt we’re not targeted, since no Egyptian sees Greek-Christians as enemies.” “There is no problem with our buildings, our hospitals, churches and schools,” he said. “There is no question of evacuation as we don’t feel insecure.”

“Regarding the Greek Community of Alexandria, the situation is completely under control, and the buildings and churches are absolutely safe. We contacted our diplomatic authorities, all the community and I think everything until now is all right,” the president of the Greek Community of Alexandria Yiannis Siokas added.

“Greeks worry, but they remain calm. Our Diaspora Greeks are not used to leaving and it should be noted that no one has ever reacted against Greeks or foreigners,” he added.
