Orthodox Christians Convene at Sumela

Sümela MonasteryA religious ceremony by Orthodox Christians began at Sumela Monastery in the Macka district of the northern Trabzon province in Turkey. The Sumela Monastery is a 1,600-year-old ancient Orthodox monastery located at a 1,200-meter height on a steep cliff.

On August 15, the Orthodox Christians held a religious ceremony for the Dormition of The Virgin Mary. Visitors were allowed to enter the monastery with entrance cards they had been given by the Trabzon governorship.

The visitors later started the ceremony under the tutelage of Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomew. About 350 people from Russia, Georgia, Greece, Australia and Ukraine attended the ceremony.

“Being in Sümela is a sacred experience for us as well as for every faithful Christian,” said Bartholomew in a speech he made in both Turkish and Greek.
