The Greek Paradise of 17M Tourists

greece-coastThe tourism industry has rapidly developed over the years. From 25 million tourists in 1950, their number exceeded one billion in 2012. With an average rise of 3.3 percent, the number of tourists is expected to reach 1.8 billion tourists in 2030.
The above data were mentioned at the World Tourism Organization report under the title Tourism Highlights 2013 that was recently published. Tourism contributes a lot to national economies both directly and indirectly. According to the report, “Tourism supports to a great extent the national economies as each tourist creates directly and indirectly eleven workplaces while the tourism revenues were up to one trillion dollars for the first time and reached 1.075 billion.” The majority of tourists go to Europe which absorbs 52 percent of international visitors, while Asia-Pacific follows with 234 million tourists who represent 23 percent.
A 52 percent of tourists travel by plane while 40 percent travels by car. Only 6 percent travels by sea while 2 percent travels by train. Leisure tourism represents 52 percent, while an important percentage of tourists travel for health or religious reasons (27 percent). A 14 percent of international tourists travel for professional reasons.
The country with the most arrivals in the world is France with the USA and China following. Turkey is in the sixth place regarding the number of arrivals, as it was visited by 35.7 million tourists in 2012. However, regarding the revenues from tourism, the list is quite different with the USA ranking first with 126.2 billion dollars leaving the first-in-arrivals France in the third place with 53.7 billion dollars.
Greece ranks 17th with 15,518,000 tourists. As far as the country’s revenues from tourism are concerned, Greece is in the 22nd place. According to the report’s data, its revenues stood at 12,879 billion dollars. On average, each tourist spends 832 dollars in Greece.
Chinese and German visitors spend the most money on tourism. However, regarding the population the most generous tourists are Australians with 1,210 dollars per person, while Germans follow with 1,023 dollars. Canadians rank third with an average spent on tourism of 1,007 dollars.
Unfortunately, Athens is not among the top cities for tourism in contrast to neighboring Istanbul, which is sixth on an international level and third in Europe, according to the Mastercard global destination cities 2012-13 report. The revenues of Istanbul from tourism are 8.9 billion dollars
According to Euromonitor International, Athens rank 82nd regarding the number of arrivals (data of the year 2011).
Greece expects this year around 17 million tourists, about 1,500,000 more in comparison to 2012. This rise will generate more profits and more jobs. The target is 20 million tourist in the years to come.
