Turk Arrested On Lesbos For €7M Debt

businessamnGreek tax agents investigating businesses for tax evasion have arrested a 59-year-old Turkish businessman on the island of Lesbos and charged him with failing to pay 7 million euros ($9.33 million) in taxes.
The man, whose name was not released, was said to be the owner of small boats connecting Mytilene to Ayvalik. Greek authorities said he was operating in Greece for many years but not paying taxes, similar to many Greeks.
He was taken into custody after inspectors from the financial crimes squad SDOE found he was taking money for tickets but not paying any taxes on it. Tax evasion is common on many Greek islands but the government said it needs money to offset a crushing economic crisis and has stepped up enforcement of the laws.
