Graduates Return to Kastelorizo to Work

F0D53833D2F2BD371208E48174750023On the most remote island of the Aegean, the island of Kastelorizo, one would expect that the place could be deserted by young people. And yet, it is exactly the opposite, as according to Greek media, the island’s young people return to their homeland to prosper after completing their studies at universities around the country, as in Athens they have to face the nightmare of unemployment.
Eftychia Karagianni and Sofia Kasioti are among the graduates who returned to Kastelorizo to work at a local café-bar. As they said, they love the quiet winter on the island. However, they stressed the island’s insufficient medical care, especially after the recent closure of the pharmacy. Another example is Eirini Leleki, who completed her studies in sociology and returned to Kastelorizo to work in a tourist office.
Amalia Gavriilidou, a hotel owner, has chosen the same path. “I am a lucky mother who raised her children in the fresh air, but my children have fewer options here, in comparison to those living in urban centers. For example, this year, we had no foreign language teacher and the children had no access to any foreign language, despite the fact that we live in a touristic place and we need it.”
