Despite Tourist Killing, UK Ambassador Says Greece Safe

kittmerThe United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Greece, John Kittmer, visited Malia, Crete and met with the family of Tyrell Matthews Burton, the young British man who was murdered on Crete and said that despite the tragedy, “Greece is a hospitable, friendly and safe country.”
The suspect in the case is not Greek. In a written announcement, Kittmer said the aim of his visit was to support his colleagues in the consulate, the local authorities and all those involved in the case.
“The death of a young man in such conditions is a great tragedy that provokes pain in all of us. The police investigation and the judicial process are in progress,” the Ambassador said. He continued: “I cannot comment on the specific conditions of the incident. Making assumptions do not help.”
Kittmer noted that Malia is a popular destination for many British tourists, especially young ones. He added that about two months ago, he started an annual informative campaign in Malia, which is held in all destinations that young British tourists choose to spend their holidays in Greece, such as Zakynthos, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes and Kos.
“Despite this tragic incident, the message remains valid and relevant. We tell young tourists: you can have a great time and have fun, and at the same time be safe and act responsibly. We all have to respect the local rules and customs,” the UK Ambassador pointed out.
According to his words, “Only 715 incidents of different types were declared to our consulates in Greece last year, compared to the 2 million British tourists that came to Greece.”
