New Metro Line 2 Ready To Roll

metro (4)The project of expansion of Line 2 toward Elliniko has added to the Metro network of Athens some 5.5 kilometers of underground rail and four new Stations (Ilioupolis, Alimos, Argyroupoli and Elliniko) that will open on noon on July 26, connecting Athens’ center to its southern coastline.
Seventeen new trains are as well to be introduced into the Athens metro network. The South Korean-manufactured trains cost 155 million euros ($204.7 million) each.
Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis will pay a working visit on July 25 to the new Metro stations, while the extension toward Haidari is expected to be open to passengers in late September.
The station in the southern suburbs of Athens, is expected to serve 80,000 passengers on a daily basis. According to Athens Metro assessments, with the launch of this extension, daily trips by car will be reduced by 50,000, and the distance between Elliniko and Syntagma will now take no longer than only 14 minutes.
