The Grigor Prlichev Literary Association distributed a book titled, The Little Book of Big Greek Lies, to all Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate in Canberra, according to information by the Australian Hellenic Educators Association (AHEA).
As neoskosmos reports, the book written by the activist Chris Stefou, includes 20 essays with headings such as Big Greek Lie #6 – Greeks Are a Superior Race, and content such as, unlike your modern Greek great-grandparents who spoke anything but Greek, our great-grandparents all spoke Macedonian.
In general, the book questions several entrenched views prevailing in the modern Greek culture, focusing on the ethnic origin of modern Greeks, their historical identity and some historical facts, the Greek political system, and many historical, cultural, political and social topics relating to the Macedonian issue.
The book caused reactions, with the AHEA President Dr. Panayiotis Diamadis stating that, “Historical debate is great, but deliberately vilifying people is unacceptable. As educators we felt obliged to act and to protest against such malicious material being circulated at the heart of Australian democracy.”
The Australian Hellenic Educator’s Association’s stance is that the copies of this book have no place in the Parliament House and that they should all be dispatched to the paper recycling facility.
