Many Greeks Surviving on Charity

bbcBritish network BBC dedicated almost half an hour to a report showing the tragic situation in Greece due to the economic crisis and the extensive cuts. The report of the BBC envoy focused mainly on the huge problem of medical care faced by hundreds of thousands of families in the country.

The reporter visited a community clinic in Athens which serves more than 9,000 jobless Greeks without any health insurance to cover their medical expenses. The British journalist visited the house of a six-member family, whose seven-year-old son suffers from a serious larynx disease which affects his breathing and causes swelling on the face as well. Seven-year-old Christos can suffer an attack many times within a month and each time he needs to be injected with a medicine that costs 600 euros. His family cannot afford the medication and went to the community clinic. Dr Vihas, who does voluntary work in the clinic, is trying to find medicine from hospitals which can provide some, at least to those who have life-threatening diseases.

The BBC reporter interviewed some other people who are in a very bad financial situation,  jobless and uninsured. Among them is a single mother whose disabled child has been diagnosed with cancer, a jobless 59-year-old man who has suffered three strokes, heart attacks and has diabetes and is given food and medicine every few days by the community clinic in order to survive. The reporter also visited the General Hospital of Athens, Evangelismos, which lacks basic medical supplies and materials.
