One in Three Tourism Employees is Uninsured

ERGAZOMENOS_420_420Undeclared labor during the summer season has become Greece’s new scourge, as after numerous controls it was found that one in three workers in tourist enterprises is uninsured.
As it was officially announced by ΙΚΑ (Social Insurance Institute, the largest social security organization in Greece), echelons from the Special Service for the Control of Insurance with the assistance of the Hellenic Police carry out repeated controls at all tourist resorts aiming to locate uninsured labor in seasonal businesses: taverns, bars, nightclubs, snack bars, hotels, water sports, travel agencies. Heavy fines are imposed on offender employers.
In total, in June 2013, there were spot checks in 1,345 businesses and 1,680 uninsured workers were recorded in a total of 4,818 workers.
Fines of 995,000 euros were imposed on the spot for non-compliance with the book concerning newly recruited staff. The drawn up reports of the spot checks were forwarded to the competent IKA branches in order for levies and subsequent fines to be imposed.
