PeiraiasOn July 1, in Belgium’s capital, Brussels, the Council of European Union announced the cities that will host European Maritime Day (EMD) every year until 2019.

For the year 2015, EMD will be hosted in Greece, in the city of Piraeus, transferring in that way “two and a half thousand years of maritime history in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean,” as announced by the European Commission.

EMD will travel to the English Channel with Poole, UK in 2016, to the Baltic with Turku, Finland in 2017, to the Black Sea with Burgas, Bulgaria in 2018 and the Atlantic with Lisbon, Portugal in 2019.

With the opportunity of the decision’s announcement, the Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki stated: “This is an important date for EU Maritime policy. The selection of hosting cities mirrors the diversity of Europe’s maritime environment.”

She continued: “I thank Member States for their support and trust, and hope that European Maritime Days will continue to be a symbol of the successful development of the Integrated Maritime Policy for many years to come.”

In 2013, EMD took place in Valletta, Malta, on May 21-22. It was a major success with more than 850 participants, while a wide range of subjects were discussed over the conference sessions and stakeholder workshops. The 2014 EMD edition will take place in Bremen, Germany and will be dedicated to innovation and technologies.
