Papapetrou’s Photos Show Through The Worlds

The-Loners-2009 (1)Where does childhood end, where does it begin?  In the photo exhibition by the Greek-Australian photographer Polyxeni Papapetrou  that bears the title, Between the Worlds, children are depicted as animals trapped between the worlds of childhood and adulthood of the animal and man. In Papapetrou’s work, there is identification with the world of children which is especially valuable and rare.

The photo exhibition, Between the Worlds, will take place in Antipodes Festival in cooperation with the Greek Museum. “Papapetrou walks the line between fantasy and theater; mythology and reality; archetype and play; male and female; child and adult; animal and human.

As with all her work this series tells a story that includes her autobiographical relationship with her children, but it also says a lot more about the state of childhood – its place in our culture and how we react to images of children in photography.

“Papapetrou has a perspicacious understanding of this and the confusing signals sent out as children turn into adolescents and this series is an attempt to address that transition with all the emotions and the confusion it may well raise,” Susan Bright wrote on Between the Words.
