Sunken Liner Sea Diamond’s Hearings Close to End

h0647946.limghandlerSix years after the cruise liner Sea Diamond sank off the coast of the Greek island Santorini, the trial of 13 people involved in the case began a few months ago and the hearings are expected to be completed by the end of July, according to Skai.
During the accident, Jean Christophe Allain, 45, and his daughter Maud, 16, both French tourists drowned after the Sea Diamond struck a reef off the coast of Santorini and sank.
The Prosecutor, Evi Salma, had previously said that the reef the Sea Diamond hit, did not appear on sea charts, but the collision could have been avoided if the ship’s sonar and one of its three radars had been working.
Salma had charged the defendants with breaching the safety of sea transport, manslaughter through negligence, causing sea pollution and breaching international safety regulations.
A Misdemeanors Court in Piraeus will be called during this week, which will focus on documents in relation with the sinking. Lawyers representing the state have raised questions about studies by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research, as reported in Kathimerini newspaper.
A document noting that asbestos was not used in the vessel’s construction has been submitted to the court by the Sea Diamond’s manufacturing company. Traces of the chemical, which is carcinogenic, were found in the wreck.
