Greek Crisis Spiked Suicides

autoktoniesThe number of suicides in Greece during the period 2009-2011, as  recorded by the registries and forensic services was revealed in Parliament by the Finance Minister, who quoted relevant documents of the Greek Statistical Authority.
According to the data, during these three years the financial crisis had already started, a total of 1,245 suicides was recorded. Specifically, in 2009, 391 committed suicide. In 2010, the number was 377 and in 2011 it was 477. ELSTAT does not yet have available data on suicide attempts, nor for suicides that occurred in 2012.
This data was communicated to the Parliament through a letter from Finance Minister, Yannis Stournaras, after the question of parliamentary representative of Golden Dawn, Christos Pappas, on the criteria and parameters under which the research of ELSTAT is being conducted to draw conclusions about the number of suicides.
In his question, the Golden Dawn MP pointed out that while executives of ELSTAT are already prosecuted for felony in the case of the artificial inflation of the deficit in 2009, at the same time the Greek Statistical Authority announced a reduced number of suicides, although according to figures from the Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection, suicides or attempted suicides amounted from 1.1.2009  to 23.08.2012 to 3,124 nationwide.
