Bakopoulos’ Sisters Cooking Something Greek

sistersThe Three Greek Sisters, Betty, Eleni and Samantha Bakopoulos, from Toronto’s Danforth neighborhood, have produced cookbooks that place Greek food on a pedestal next to some of the most prominent and respected kitchens of the world.

Their first cookbook, Three Sisters Around the Greek Table, received a Gourmand World Cookbook Award, and New York Book Festival, Best Cookbook of the Year Award.  It is a national bestseller. Their second cookbook, Three Sisters Back to the Beginning, was published in April 2013.

With a photo of the traditional stone house where their grandparents used to live on the cover, the new book of the Three Sisters goes deeper in exploring the Greek roots. The sisters took the opportunity to learn more Greek recipes when three old women from Greece visited Canada. Eleni Souglis, Eleni Koumbridis and Eleni Orfanidis taught the three young sisters all basic secrets of Greek cuisine.

“We got together with them several times,” says Eleni Bakopoulos. “We were so proud of perfecting these back-to-the-basics recipes, but there was something else we didn’t expect. Making these things forces you to slow down, to hang out. And while you wait, you chat. And while you struggle, you laugh. And as you learn, you connect. It’s something that’s lost in today’s fast-paced world.”

“We find that Greek cuisine is so often reserved for restaurants, but we love telling people that it’s something you can do easily at home,” says Samantha Bakopoulos. “Greek cooking is so healthy and so simple. You don’t need a special pantry. You need some Greek olive oil and some oregano and you’re ready to go,” she adds.
