EA632331AE3F3955B70F55B2688F5858The  400-year-old church of Saint George in Moscopole, in the Korçë District, southeastern Albania, was plundered in the early morning hours of June 17.

The thieves sawed the bars of the outer door and managed to remove an important part of the iconostasis and icons, while they also took the safe.

According to the police, it is the fourth time that thieves have broken  into the church causing serious damage to other precious items as well.

Saint George’s church is included in the list of cultural monuments “of first category” and its last restoration, with EU funds, took place in 2008.

The Albanian Unity for Human Rights Party, related to the Greek minority of Albania reacted immediately and stated in its announcement, “The incidents of robberies in churches and other religious buildings are very often repeated, profaning and endangering these irreplaceable values of national and cultural heritage.”

The Unity for Human Rights Party asked for the solidarity of people against these violent acts and called the authorities to investigate and solve as soon as possible all these incidences and lead the thieves to justice.
