Belgian Journalists’ Protest for ERT

827B871A5F8D2FE939895943110EC8DFThe Belgian newspaper De Morgen referred on June 17  to the protest letter given to the Greek Embassy in Brussels  by about 50 Belgian journalists asking for the immediate reopening of ERT.

As mentioned in De Morgen, the message of this symbolic act of protest can be summarized in the phrase “stand up for journalism”. By writing this letter, the Belgian Association of Journalists wants to show its solidarity with Greek journalists for the closure of ERT. The newspaper also reminds that ERT consists of three television channels, seven radio stations and 17 regional radio stations around Greece.

Belgian journalists appear to support that, “After the shutdown of ERT, pluralism of the media and democracy are in danger in Greece.” In addition, they ask Europe to intensify its pressure on the Greek government in order for the decision to be withdrawn, while they criticize the EU for the policy of painful austerity that it imposed on Greece.”

In conclusion, De Morgen mentioned that the Belgian journalists in their announcement stressed that, “The storm of austerity imposed by the Troika, does not only lead to the impoverishment of the vast majority of the population, but it also weakens the functioning of democracy in an unprecedented way.”
