Malaria Risk in Xanthi and Evros

KOUN_581_355The first cases of West Nile virus have already made their appearance  in Greece,  according to official KEELPNO figures, with Xanthi and Evros topping the list among those areas where malaria outbreaks are more likely to occur.
Diseases can appear through mosquitoes, mainly malaria, while just one case is enough to put a large area in quarantine and forbidding blood donations, which has already happened in Xanthi.
In its statement KEELPNO stressed: “The importance of an early diagnosis and appropriate complete treatment of this type of malaria is crucial in stopping the spread of the disease in any other parts of Greece.”
Recent data (May 2013),  have revealed that the first mosquitoes have actually appeared positive in West Nile virus. Both in Xanthi and Evros, there is a real risk of malaria outbreaks making it an urgent need for citizens to take protective measures.
