In a letter to the Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, the Chairman of the Greek Community of Melbourne, pointed out that for many decades now ERT has been a bridge for Greeks living abroad with their motherland and has contributed to the promotion of Greek culture, language and GreekĀ traditions around the world.
Intense reactions have been triggered among all Greek-Australians by the Greek governmentās decision to shut down, even “temporarily,”Ā state public broadcaster ERT, while they are planning massive mobilizations.
According to a poll taken by Neos Kosmos newspaper, 70% of the readers condemns the government’s decision. For the third consecutive day, the media are continuing their detailed reports of ERTās closure.
The Greek immigrants’ reactions are also displayed along with statements of the presidents of the Greek Communities of Melbourne, Victoria and Sydney on the “importance of a state public broadcaster in maintaining the Greek identity of the Diaspora and the great shock spread over its closure,” together with a letter of protest to Samaras.
