Unemployment Hits 5% Increase in A Year

b60dbcc0f278d6db8a032692de88fc18According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, mostly known by its acronym ELSTAT, the Greek unemployment rate has risen to 27.4% within the first quarter of 2013. If we just take a look at ELSTAT’s latest data on unemployment in Greece, we can see a 5% increase in only just one year.
According to the data published, in the first trimester of 2013 there were 3,595,921 employed and 1,355,237 unemployed. The unemployment rate was estimated to be 27.4%, compared to 26% during the previous trimester and 22.6% a year ago.
As statistics indicate, employment was reduced by 2.3% in comparison to last trimester and 6.3% in comparison to last year. The number of those unemployed has risen by 4.6% compared to last trimester and 21% overall in the last year.
The survey also shows that a higher unemployment rate seems to hit women compared to that of men (31% compared to 24.7%). Therefore, the most vulnerable group of all appears to be people aged 15-24, where unemployment was estimated to be 60%. Moreover, unemployment for young women reached 66.3%.
Regarding the education level, ELSTAT’s data reveal that 42.9% of those unemployed never went to school, 33.4% completed secondary education, at the same time that an estimated 15.3% have a post-graduate or doctoral degree.
