Compass, located in Heraclion, Crete, has been constructed in an arrow shape design which, according to Office 25 Architects, actually shows the path followed by the Greek God Zeus and Europe in the popular folklore.
For the design process two facts were taken into serious consideration;   a European school with an international and cultural character along with a unique Cretan landscape that carries thousands of years of legends and traditions.
Among other things concerning the project’s construction, within the building each education level operates independently. In the center of the complex is the kindergarten, which is protected from both wings like an embrace. An enclosed, safe courtyard, a sheltered space where children play and adapt to the new data with security, is also featured within the kindergarten.
The primary school is located on the lower level of the school, featuring a courtyard with a one entry-exit point. There is however, direct access to the courtyard from all classes of the primary school. Surprisingly, there are no staircases inside and outside the school, while an independent, controlled and protected area has been created. Finally, the secondary school’s classrooms are placed on the two highest levels of the school building. The total area takes up 7,500 square meters.
